This is a vegan, oil/soy/gluten free take on Sweet&Sour chicken. Clearly, not the same thing, but a delicious and fulfilling meal non-the-less. This particular page is the recipe for the orange sauce, see the Breaded Cauliflower page for the “chicken” part of this meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c. water (or nut/oat milk for a more "creamier" taste)
  • 1/4 c. lemon juice
  • 1/3 c. rice vinegar
  • 1 orange
  • 2 tsp Braggs liquid aminos or salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (add more for more heat)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • 3 tbsp oats

Instructions

  • Blend all sauce ingredients in a high powered blender until smooth and creamy.
  • Pour mixture into a saucepan, and cook on medium-high heat until it thickens, stirring constantly to prevent burning!
  • Serve on top of rice or quinoa, with breaded cauliflower or other vegetable assortments (carrots, broccoli, and/or potatoes also go well with this)
  • Garnish with green onion, sesame seeds, and/or dried onion
  • Serve hot and enjoy!
